KILL DEVIL HILLS — A Kill Devil Hills firefighter is in stable condition after sustaining injuries while responding to a Sunday house fire in the 300 block of West Arch Street, according to the town spokesperson.

“The entire Kill Devil Hills family stands united in sending our coworker positive thoughts and prayers for a full and swift recovery,” Rachel Tackett said in an email, noting that the nature of the injuries won’t be disclosed out of respect for the firefighter’s privacy.

The firefighter was transported to Outer Banks Health Hospital in Nags Head, according to a Monday town press release on the fire. Home occupants all evacuated safety.

“The occupants of the home were permanent renters,” Tackett said in her Wednesday email. “It is our understanding that they will be staying with family.”

As of Wednesday morning, the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Kill Devil Hills Fire Marshal, she said.

The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department responded to the structure fire at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday, according to the press release.

“The fire originated on the front deck of the home and spread inside, causing significant fire and

water damage,” the release said. “The ground floor also sustained smoke and water damage. Firefighters worked to contain the fire to the second floor.”

Fire crews from Colington and Kitty Hawk assisted, and the Kill Devil Hills Police Department and Dare County Emergency Medical Services also responded, according to the release.

“The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department would like to remind everyone that having a working smoke alarm and a practiced home escape plan can save lives—check your alarms regularly and ensure every family member knows how to get out safely in an emergency,” Tackett shared on Wednesday.
