Nearly 4,000 northern Outer Banks customers lost power on Monday morning as salt buildup—in one case, causing a power pole to catch fire—caused mostly short outages, according to a Dominion Energy spokesperson.

A person suffering from “severe burns” after a house in Manteo exploded and caught fire was airlifted to a hospital Friday afternoon, according to radio reports.

The July 4 week, typically considered the busiest week of the summer season on the Outer Banks, saw increased public safety agency work as anticipated, but some agencies reported fewer incidents than occurred during last year’s Independence Day week.

A Kill Devil Hills firefighter is in stable condition after sustaining injuries while responding to a Sunday house fire, according to the town spokesperson.
