MANTEO — A cloud of black smoke rose from what appeared to be one boat on fire in Pirate’s Cove Marina in Manteo Friday in a resident-submitted video around 3:10 p.m.

Multiple firetrucks were onsite in the marina, and the fire was out before 3:25 p.m. A black cloud of smoke wafted across the Roanoke Sound toward Nags Head.

This was the second fire of the day on Roanoke Island. Citizens previously reported a house fire in Wanchese.

Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson did not have details immediately available on either fire but confirmed there was an early morning house fire Friday in Wanchese.

Dare County Fire Marshal Steve Kovacs did not return Outer Banks Insider’s calls seeking details on the fires by publication time.

Dare County Commissioners Ervin Bateman and Carson Creef in their respective remarks at the end of the Monday, Jan. 6, board of commissioners’ meeting asked for people to send prayers and donations to the Brown family, who lost their house to the fire in Wanchese.

“Bill, Elizabeth and Ben Brown lost their house over in Wanchese; just keep the guys in your prayers,” Commissioner Ervin Bateman said.

“They did rent that house, so now currently they’re having to try to bounce around and find stuff [and] places to stay,” Creef said.

Manteo First Assembly posted on social media that it will hold a $15-per-plate “Brown family barbecue fundraiser due to fire loss.”

Donations will also be accepted at the Saturday, Jan. 18, event from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, located on 812 Wingina Avenue in Manteo.

Each plate includes a pulled pork barbecue sandwich, baked beans, coleslaw, chips and cookies. Only cash or checks are accepted at the drive-through pickup event. For more information about the fundraiser, call Glenn Paul at 252-305-6881.

People can also make donations to the “Brown Family Fire Relief Fund" at any Southern Bank branch. Local branches are in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Manteo.
