MANTEO — Five days after a Manteo police officer fatally shot a Manteo resident, the district attorney released a statement that the shooting was “tragic” but “lawful,” meaning he will not file charges against the officer. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) investigation remains ongoing.
“There will not be charges against the officer,” Prosecutorial District 1 District Attorney Jeff Cruden confirmed to Outer Banks Insider on Wednesday.
Denny Winslow, a 49-year-old woman, died at the scene in the 200 block of Mother Vineyard Road after Manteo Police Department Officer Tanner P. Grogan fatally shot her, according to law enforcement reports.
Grogan shot her one time after she confronted him with “a large kitchen knife,” according to Cruden.
