KILL DEVIL HILLS — A vehicle collision caused a serious injury on Friday afternoon in Kill Devil Hills, police confirmed to Outer Banks Insider.
Details of the crash and of the injury have not yet been released but are expected next week.
“I can confirm there was a serious injury as a result of this afternoon’s crash on U.S. [Highway] 158 in the vicinity of Veelee [Drive],” Lt. Julie Haner of the Kill Devil Hills Police Department wrote in an email response to Outer Banks Insider’s inquiry around 5:50 p.m.
“I will gather further details and send a release out Monday,” Haner said.
Veelee Drive is located northeast of the entrance road to the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills.
Travel in the area was heavily affected on Friday afternoon.
The Town of Kill Devil Hills in a 1:45 p.m. social media post said that traffic was being routed to N.C. Highway 12 at Prospect Avenue, as northbound lanes were closed due to the motor vehicle crash. The post was updated just after 3:15 p.m. to share that all lanes had reopened.
Dare County Schools attributed First Flight Middle School (FFMS) and First Flight High School (FFHS) bus delays to a traffic collision near Landing Drive, which is approximately a quarter mile north of Veelee Drive.
“Due to an accident near Landing Drive in Kill Devil Hills, FFMS and FFHS buses are running approximately 30–40 minutes behind schedule this afternoon,” Dare County Schools said in a social media post shortly before 4 p.m.
“Traffic is beginning to clear, and students riding the bus should be arriving home shortly,” the post continued. “We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to ensure all students get home safely.”
