An unauthorized breach of the online PowerSchool Student Information System (SIS) used until recently by Currituck, Dare and Hyde public school districts could compromise the personal information of area students and educators in the system between 2013 and July 2024.

A notice on the PowerSchool website acknowledged that the information of current and former students and teachers across the U.S. could be affected by the “cybersecurity incident” of which the company became aware on Dec. 28, 2024.

“For involved individuals, the types of information exfiltrated in the incident included one or more of the following, which varied by person: The individual’s name, contact information, date of birth, limited medical alert information, Social Security number and other related information,” the PowerSchool announcement said.
