KILL DEVIL HILLS — A Kill Devil Hills bicyclist remained hospitalized as of early Monday afternoon following a Friday morning collision with a truck driven by a New Jersey resident.
Sabrin Meshal Ismail is “currently in fair condition,” a Sentara Norfolk General Hospital spokesperson said in an email response to Outer Banks Insider’s status inquiry.
The collision took place at the intersection of U.S. Highway 158, also called North Croatan Highway, and West Palmetto Street in Kill Devil Hills on Friday, Aug. 15, around 11:20 a.m., according to a Town of Kill Devil Hills press release issued Monday.
Ismail, 27, was traveling south on a bicycle along the multi-use sidewalk on the west side of North Croatan Highway, while a Toyota Tacoma, driven by 21-year-old David Julian Ryerson of Budd Lake, New Jersey, was making a right turn onto North Croatan Highway from West Palmetto Street to proceed south, according to the release.
“As Ms. Ismail entered the roadway on her bicycle and attempted to maneuver around the turning vehicle, she came into contact with the front of the Toyota Tacoma,” the release said.
Ismail was initially transported to The Outer Banks Health Hospital in Nags Head, and then was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, according to the release.
The incident remains under investigation. As of Monday, no traffic tickets or citations have been issued to either party, according to Town of Kill Devil Hills Police Lt. Julie Haner.
“The bicyclist remained hospitalized this weekend with no life-threatening injuries,” Haner said in a late Monday morning email.
The town press release reminded everyone to maintain roadway safety.
“The Kill Devil Hills Police Department reminds motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians alike to
always remain vigilant on the roadway, be aware of your surroundings and to follow traffic
laws,” the release said.
