$25 million federal grant will fund wildlife crossings in Dare County to protect red wolves, people

EAST LAKE — A $25 million U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration grant announced Friday will fund wildlife crossings in the East Lake area of mainland Dare County, with the goal of saving the lives of people and of endangered red wolves.

 

Red wolves once roamed from Pennsylvania to Florida and as far west as Texas, but North Carolina’s Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula is home to the only wild red wolves alive today, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service information.
