Two men who said they were employed as maintenance workers for Dare County Schools until their recent dismissals because of the Manteo Elementary School trespass incident shared what they saw as concerning systemic issues.

A man with a Canadian address was arrested Thursday on a misdemeanor “first-degree trespass enter/remain” charge for his alleged unlawful entry of Manteo Elementary School in Manteo. The same 37-year-old was arrested and charged last month with felony first-degree burglary in Kitty Hawk.

The Manteo Elementary School principal, who is a former district principal of the year, will exchange leadership roles with one of First Flight High School’s assistant principals. The transfers are effective next Monday, Oct. 6, according to the district superintendent.
