AVON — Officials identified the person who died in a “water-related” incident on Wednesday, May 13, in Avon as Robert Sloan Scroggin, 41, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, according to Cape Hatteras National Seashore information.
“On the afternoon of May 13, a water-related fatality occurred off a beach in front of the village of Avon,” according to the original statement the Cape Hatteras National Seashore spokesperson provided to Outer Banks Insider on May 13.
“Cape Hatteras National Seashore rangers and the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad provided immediate assistance and Dare County Emergency Medical Services provided additional medical care to the adult individual,” according to that statement.
Further details, including if an investigation is ongoing in the case, have not been made available as of publication time.
“On behalf of the City of Fayetteville, I extend my condolences to Sloan’s family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones,” Mayor Molly Rawn said in a public statement shared on social media.
“Sloan cared deeply about Fayetteville and dedicated years of service to our community through the planning commission, city council and his work helping people build homes and lives here in our city,” Rawn said in the May 14 statement.
Scroggin served on the Fayetteville City Council from 2018-2022; worked as a mathematical sciences instructor at the University of Arkansas; and was also a home remodeler and licensed realtor, according to a May 14 article in the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette.
“The passing of Sloan Scroggin of Fayetteville, Arkansas, leaves a void in the hearts of many,” according to Scroggins’ obituary, which says he was a husband and father.
