SWANQUARTER — Two Virginia residents died Friday in an early morning vehicle incident near Swanquarter in mainland Hyde County.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol “responded to a double fatal collision involving a single vehicle” on state game lands at approximately 2:10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, according to a Friday afternoon press release.

John Fields, 38, and Timothy Hubbard, 39, both of Bracey, Virginia, died on scene, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol release said.

A 2020 Chevrolet truck driven by Fields “was turning around on a path and backed into a canal, causing the vehicle to overturn onto its roof and become submerged in the water,” the release said.

The other passenger, 33-year-old Robert Nunnery of Grimesland, North Carolina, “was able make it out of the vehicle,” according to the release.

The incident took place on a path located off Outfall Canal Road, according to the release.

Maps of the area show that Gull Rock Game Land is state-owned and includes the southeastern section of Outfall Canal Road. The game land also extends on both sides around the road’s northwestern section.
